Earning a top five placement in TopSEO reviews of email marketing service providers, Mailigen’s new ranking represents a significant milestone for this European based email marketing service provider. What Is Email Marketing Situation in Russia?

10 to 13 October 2011, Russia hosted its first email marketing conference “Mailing Conference 2011”. Russian marketers clearly marked their up-coming trend: Russia looks towards the West and is more than serious to reach global standards. Mailigen, one of Europe’s leading email service providers, has made a significant investment in the development of email marketing in Russia by consulting local marketers and sharing its international business experience in the Western market.

Who participated?

During the conference, Mailigen team shared its experience and opinion with numerous marketers, businessmen, bloggers and other interested.

Presentations and lectures were given by representatives of email service providers like Unisender, Mail.Ru, MailerSoft, DirectList, EmailMatrix, internet marketing agency FutureBit, brand development agency Brandflight and others.

While among special guests were two worldwide known independent email marketing experts – Tamara Gielen and Kath Pay from www.PlanToEngage.com.

What did we learn?

Mailigen team went to Russia to spend four days discussing email marketing issues. The conference took place nowhere else but on a cruise ferry going from St. Petersburg to Stockholm and back. Guest lectures were given by Arturs Bernovskis, executive director of Mailigen, and Viacheslav Kolomeyets, manager of the project Maligen.ru. Here will be a short resume of what was seen and heard during the conference.

1. Email recipient in Russia is not protected against spam

One of the most discussed issues during the conference was email marketing legitimacy. Questions like „is email marketing the same as spam” are still popular on the East of us. There are laws in Russia indirectly refering to email marketing, however, they are vaguely described, do not meet current situation and few practitioners comply with them. Unsolicited commercial emails or so-called spams are often guests in recipients’ inboxes.

Situation in SMS marketing is even more critical. As there are neither laws regulating SMS sendings nor mobile phone spam filters, recipients in Russia are completely unprotected against mobile message spam.

2. Russian email marketers look towards the West

So far in Russia, email marketing was widely considered as sending mass messages totally ignoring recipient wish to receive (more often – not to receive) emails and even not allowing to unsubscribe from them.

But step by step, email marketing in Russia has taken a course to the West and has started little by little to approach global standards. Russian marketers are paying more and more attention to qualitative email design, content, corporate ethics and interests of recipients.

3. Russia – promising market for email marketing

It’s only now that email marketing in Russia meets rapid development. There is still lack of information about professional email marketing in Russia, and only few companies include email marketing in their overall marketing strategies. Today marketers are becoming aware of business effectiveness realizing qualitative email marketing campaigns. Mostly these are international companies, exporting businesses and large companies following the latest trends. Consequently, there is a growing demand for high-level email service providers. While in the market, there are only few ESPs, including international ones.

„This is the right time to enter Russian market with email marketing based on Western business experience and matching the highest global standards. In comparison with Europe, Russian companies often are much more larger and of course their data bases are also bigger than our usual ones. For us it means working more hard work, but that’s just what we are looking for,” says Arturs Bernovskis, Mailigen executive director.

4. Mobile boom in Russia

Although Russia is taking its first steps in qualitative email marketing, one freshly new trend is absolutely clear. There is surprisingly high demand in marketing activities via mobile phones: reading email in mobile version and SMS marketing.

Extreme growth of smartphones has reached all the region – Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other neighbor countries. Since reading email in mobile version is widely used, marketers will have to think very seriously about optimizing emails for mobile phones. Statistics are more than surprising: almost 20% read emails via mobile phones! The reason is Internet accessibility or better would be say inaccessibility. Terrestrial Internet is poorly accessible in the wide territory of Russia, while mobile Internet is easily available even in the most remote corners of Russia. Of course the peak of mobile era is not yet reached. The number of mobile users continues to grow in Russia and other CIS countries.

Thanks to our really hard working development team we have prepared some cool features for our users in the following version.  Even though some of you could have noticed small changes over time,  there is actually much more to it than it could seem at first glance.

Here is quick overview on the bunch of cool new features:

Mailigen API. (Application Programming Interface) offers you easy way to connect your account to other sites and services online, including your company CRM,  website registration forms and much more. Expand Mailigen functionality by allowing external applications to retrieve and write data to Mailigen. You can get ready API code within your account settings API section, by logging in to your account.
Online Surveys. All Mailigen accounts, including FREE accounts, have access to the new and powerful online survey platform. Fully customizable, quick to set up and fast to deploy questionnaires to your clients, coworkers and public. No software to install, surveys are built in your Mailigen account for no extra cost. You can choose survey templates or build your own fully personalized questionnaire and send it via email or post a link on your website or Twitter, Facebook where people can participate, or even better you can embed the survey in your website. We also offer full data  and reports after survey completion, that includes personalized responses and overall view on the whole campaign.
Advanced Web Forms. Personalize your subscriber experiences with new web form options and fully editable system emails, like: subscription confirmation and signup request. You now have more control on how will the system messages look when each new subscriber signs up. We have added few more of publicly accessible system forms that you can adjust to match your company’s style.
Add-ons. Social Media Integration.  Today everybody is crazy about Social Media and with no exception – us too. New easy and fast social icon integration is our new key feature. If you have a social profile just add follow icons, if you want your readers to share your content you can add all different social share icons with just a click of a button and they get generated automatically. You can also automatically publish your email campaigns to your Twitter and Facebook accounts, no manual posting needed anymore.
Email Reports Verified by EEC. Mailigen email reports are now verified by EEC (Email Experience Council) for industry standards and measurement accuracy. Since January Mailigen is proud to be part of S.A.M.E. project, we have adopted new email report metrics and have received certified seal from EEC.

Mailigen joins the S.A.M.E. project

One of the major obstacles that nowadays haunt email marketing specialists is the lack of consistent standards for email marketing statistics. The DMA/Email Experience Council’s project, called S.A.M.E. (Support the Adoption of Metrics for Email), has been introduced to create a unified standard system to use in email marketing reports. As part of the project, eight new statistic definitions have been introduced to email metrics & reports. Main goal of the project is to attract more email service providers (ESPs) to adopt their systems to the S.A.M.E. standard.

S.A.M.E. ProjectIn January 2011, Mailigen finally joined the S.A.M.E. project, and has updated its email marketing platform to meet the standards introduced by this project.

Previously, if only data like bounced emails, delivered emails (now accepted emails), opened emails, click count, and click through rate was available, now Mailigen’s system houses new statistics:

  • accepted emails,
  • accepted rate,
  • confirmed open rate,
  • email render rate,
  • average recipient render rate.

Now our system will show not only the bounced email rate, but statistics like the ‘accepted email rate’. This term refers to the total amount of emails that were received by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The statistic of bounced emails is used for finding out the amount of real email addresses and clean the databases, but the ‘accepted email rate’ is used to deduce the amount of confirmed opens and their rate.

Also Mailigen, by introducing the ‘confirmed open rate’ and ‘email render rate’ statistics, will focus more attention on how the email was opened and read; for example, we’ll determine whether the particular email address was deduced only after loading the pictures, or after a click through. Of course, making such statistics more precise won’t make the numbers a huge chunk more reliable, but employing these new methods gives additional variables for precise email campaign assessment.

Up until now, four email service providers have opted to employ the new statistic system, but during the next few months, 10 new email service grandeurs will introduce these statistics in their software. And that in turn means that we can expect these new statistics to influence email marketing strategy as a whole.

We should also mention that everyone participating in the S.A.M.E. project receives an “email measurement accuracy” seal, which can be housed in the homepage of the particular email service provider–perhaps one day the S.A.M.E. seal will become a benchmark of sort for ESPs.
