New Technology in Email Marketing: Open Mail Format

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Mailigen Founder, Arturs Bernovskis, recently attended the first email marketing conference in Russia and Mailigen participated in a session discussing Open Mail Format (OMF) technology. OMF is an open standard for tagging email, the open standard displays information in mailboxes in a user-friendly way and allows webmasters and email managers to significantly increase the response rate. New technology delivering ROI – we like that.

Open Mail Format. Source: http://openmailformat.org/

OMF allows for notifications, such as social networking or invitations to be “tagged” so your email service providers can give users custom information based on the email content. Built on the idea of software that interprets the information encoded in the email, OMF’s open license can be used by any email service provider. This makes it ideal because it is simple to use this format and integrate the capability into email marketing platforms. As a message sender, you only need to provide the specific HTML tags. The OMF tag is discovered by the email service provider platform and it changes the email view, highlighting the key components of the message. As an example, you could create a tag to view the picture of a user who sent a social networking connection request, action links and text of the notification. The tags in the email allow the ESP to detect the message type and image type, and list for inclusion in the “preview”. The information is then shown in a list of emails in the inbox. Benefits of using OMF include:

  • Simple to use format for email managers
  • Email managers can work with newsletters, promotions, alerts and notifications in their email list
  • Increases the call to action response rates
  • Provides an easier view of email information for the subscriber
  • Automatically classifies messages and sorts them by marketing the important message content
  • Increases subscriber retention rates for web sites
  • Reduces the number of clicks a user needs to access a site

Take a look at examples

With any technology, there are some areas for improvement. OMF needs to be carefully applied by ESPs to ensure spam is appropriately managed.

Arturs was impressed with the new capability saying

Today when our inboxes are overcrowded with emails, we are looking for ways to speed up how people check email and make it more productive. Open Mail Format offers an easy-to-use format to check emails in one single step. No need to waste your precious time by opening each mail and guessing what’s inside. People will appreciate doing it with one clink, moreover, in a visually pleasant email format.

After spending some time with developers using OMF, we are very excited about the possibilities for our customers. For more information on OMF and the specifications, please visit http://openmailformat.org/.

What Is Email Marketing Situation in Russia?

Monday, October 24th, 2011

10 to 13 October 2011, Russia hosted its first email marketing conference “Mailing Conference 2011”. Russian marketers clearly marked their up-coming trend: Russia looks towards the West and is more than serious to reach global standards. Mailigen, one of Europe’s leading email service providers, has made a significant investment in the development of email marketing in Russia by consulting local marketers and sharing its international business experience in the Western market.

Who participated?

During the conference, Mailigen team shared its experience and opinion with numerous marketers, businessmen, bloggers and other interested.

Presentations and lectures were given by representatives of email service providers like Unisender, Mail.Ru, MailerSoft, DirectList, EmailMatrix, internet marketing agency FutureBit, brand development agency Brandflight and others.

While among special guests were two worldwide known independent email marketing experts – Tamara Gielen and Kath Pay from www.PlanToEngage.com.

What did we learn?

Mailigen team went to Russia to spend four days discussing email marketing issues. The conference took place nowhere else but on a cruise ferry going from St. Petersburg to Stockholm and back. Guest lectures were given by Arturs Bernovskis, executive director of Mailigen, and Viacheslav Kolomeyets, manager of the project Maligen.ru. Here will be a short resume of what was seen and heard during the conference.

1. Email recipient in Russia is not protected against spam

One of the most discussed issues during the conference was email marketing legitimacy. Questions like „is email marketing the same as spam” are still popular on the East of us. There are laws in Russia indirectly refering to email marketing, however, they are vaguely described, do not meet current situation and few practitioners comply with them. Unsolicited commercial emails or so-called spams are often guests in recipients’ inboxes.

Situation in SMS marketing is even more critical. As there are neither laws regulating SMS sendings nor mobile phone spam filters, recipients in Russia are completely unprotected against mobile message spam.

2. Russian email marketers look towards the West

So far in Russia, email marketing was widely considered as sending mass messages totally ignoring recipient wish to receive (more often – not to receive) emails and even not allowing to unsubscribe from them.

But step by step, email marketing in Russia has taken a course to the West and has started little by little to approach global standards. Russian marketers are paying more and more attention to qualitative email design, content, corporate ethics and interests of recipients.

3. Russia – promising market for email marketing

It’s only now that email marketing in Russia meets rapid development. There is still lack of information about professional email marketing in Russia, and only few companies include email marketing in their overall marketing strategies. Today marketers are becoming aware of business effectiveness realizing qualitative email marketing campaigns. Mostly these are international companies, exporting businesses and large companies following the latest trends. Consequently, there is a growing demand for high-level email service providers. While in the market, there are only few ESPs, including international ones.

„This is the right time to enter Russian market with email marketing based on Western business experience and matching the highest global standards. In comparison with Europe, Russian companies often are much more larger and of course their data bases are also bigger than our usual ones. For us it means working more hard work, but that’s just what we are looking for,” says Arturs Bernovskis, Mailigen executive director.

4. Mobile boom in Russia

Although Russia is taking its first steps in qualitative email marketing, one freshly new trend is absolutely clear. There is surprisingly high demand in marketing activities via mobile phones: reading email in mobile version and SMS marketing.

Extreme growth of smartphones has reached all the region – Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other neighbor countries. Since reading email in mobile version is widely used, marketers will have to think very seriously about optimizing emails for mobile phones. Statistics are more than surprising: almost 20% read emails via mobile phones! The reason is Internet accessibility or better would be say inaccessibility. Terrestrial Internet is poorly accessible in the wide territory of Russia, while mobile Internet is easily available even in the most remote corners of Russia. Of course the peak of mobile era is not yet reached. The number of mobile users continues to grow in Russia and other CIS countries.

How it affects us?

Mailigen is one of Europe’s leading email service providers having clients worldwide, including US and Asia. Recently Mailigen has entered Russia and other CIS countries by launching Mailigen system in Russian www.mailigen.ru.

„We were pleasantly surprised about Russian new ideas and offered solutions in email marketing during „Mailinge Conference 2011”. We will definitely use the obtained information and experience to enrich our email marketing solutions with freshly new trends and tools,” says Arturs Bernovskis, executive director of Mailigen.

Let’s keep intrigue by not revealing Mailigen forthcoming innovations… Meanwhile, we are offering you a small photo insight of the event.

Automated Segmentation with Mailigen Online Surveys

Friday, October 14th, 2011

We’ve been working on some exciting new, easy to use, features and are proud to announce Mailigen automated segmentation. This is a completely unique capability – No other email marketing service offers fully automated segmentation.

Integrating online surveys in e-mail marketing allows you to discover more about customers. Afterwards segment contacts based on the obtained in order to send more relevant emails. Simple right?

In reality the process can be quite difficult without appropriate tools and features. Using traditional methods, you must export survey results in separate files, make your selections, then re-import results in the CRM database. Wasting your precious time and resources. We can help.

Automated segmentation process

Mailigen online surveys are much simpler to use. There is no need to export and re-import obtained results in the system. That’s because our tools allow you to create segments automatically based on survey responses. Once the respondent has completed the survey, responses are added to the database. The type of response can be used to segment contacts.

How Mailigen automated segmentation works

Setting automated segments in Mailigen doesn’t require complex knowledge of email marketing. All you have to do is to create a new segment before or after you launch the survey, then mark the option that allows storing survey results in the database. The total process can be divided into three steps: create a segment, prepare a survey and evaluate results. Now that’s simple! Here are some easy to follow instructions for getting started:

1. Create a segment

Before creating a new segment, make sure you already made a table field for values in the database. The table field will be used to create a new segment and keep survey responses. Then proceed with creating a segment or a survey.

If you already know your segmentation criteria, you can create new segments before making a survey. If you don’t know, you can create new segments after the survey when respondents complete the questionnaire. You can also create new segments when you send a new email marketing campaign to a targeted group.

2. Prepare a survey

When preparing a survey, be sure to mark the option that allows storing survey answers in the database. You can do it in the second step of writing survey questions. In the field of additional options, click ‘Add reply to the database’.

Online surveys - automated segmentation

This option is available only to following question types:

  • One answer
  • Several answers
  • Free responses

By choosing ‘one answer’ as a segmentation criterion, your grouping will be more accurate. Conversely, if there are several answers or free text responses, you can only use one keyword appearing in the answers as segmentation criteria.

3. Evaluate results

View your survey campaign results and evaluate them by analyzing the concrete segments. If you haven’t created them yet, then look at the segmentation criteria. The segmentation is done automatically and new values are added to each contact in the database. After the first time, they can be used to select a target group.

Why should you use Mailigen automated segmentation

The more appropriate and targeted your email content, the more the recipient will want to receive from you. Determining the qualitative target audience is the most important reason you should use Mailigen surveys in order to effectively create segments.

Qualitative target audiences are an important component of your email marketing strategy. Ensuring there is no waste of time and money to clean the database or pursue re-engagement campaigns for inactive recipients. Building qualitative target audiences is a long-term investment for email marketing activities.

Mailigen automated segmentation and online surveys allow you to gather information you may not obtain during the subscription process. By adding a survey link to email autoresponders, everyone who signs up for news will receive an email with the invitation to fill in a survey. The answers are stored in the database (if this option is activated in the questionnaire). Linking online surveys with segmentation and autoresponders, ensures fully automated segmentation so every new subscriber is already included in a specific target group.

We will be more than happy to help you with your first campaign that includes online surveys and automated segmentation! If you want to find out more about Mailigen online surveys, please, contact our consultant!

Top 10 opportunities offered by Mailigen online surveys

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Mailigen Online SurveysOnline surveys are a very convenient way to poll your clients and contacts using small investments. Carrying out online surveys gives a chance not only to find out the opinion of a target audience about the quality of your products and services, but also get data that may help in segmenting respondents in groups based on survey answers; thereby, creating options for sending more appropriate e-mails.

So far, online survey services have offered technical solutions in creating surveys; however, after creating a survey, some questions emerge – in what way can we offer the survey to the target audience or clients and how can we analyze and publish the results? Therefore, additional solutions have to be found that stimulate filling and circulation of surveys and publication of results.

With Mailigen online surveys, there is no need to search for additional solutions. Mailigen ensures not only the bond between a survey and a client’s data base, but also provides with sending surveys and sending autoresponders, computerized synchronization of survey results with a client’s data base, and other great options. Therefore, in this article, we will look at top 10 options offered only by Mailigen marketing platform.

1. Include a survey in your monthly newsletters

Newsletters usually are a regular process, and each company often has its own newsletter sending strategy and frequency. As newsletters are sent regularly, this is a great way to get regular feedback from clients. All you have to do is to add a link of to previously created Mailigen online survey at the side of a newsletter or inside the newsletter text with added explanation line why it is necessary to complete the survey. This way, you can get regular feedback from your clients or newsletter subscribers. Of course, not everyone will complete the survey. However, by adding an extra value to the survey, for example, offering a discount or a chance to participate in a competition, you can create stronger motivation to complete a particular online survey.

2. Set up an auto-responder with a link to a survey to get responses from new subscribers or clients

Of course, subscription forms are not made to get detailed information or receive comments about the company or brand. Subscription forms need to be used only to get new subscribers. To get additional information about a new subscriber or client, an auto-responder may be sent some time after subscription. For example, one day after subscription, you send a computerized automated e-mail with a questionnaire about customer’s habits explaining that the information will be used to ensure more qualitative services. Furthermore, using opportunity of synchronizing survey results and e-mail data base, survey data can automatically be included in data base and later used for creating high qualitytargeted segments.

3. Improve efficiency by sending surveys only to concretetarget segments

Of course, one of Mailigen’s advantages in comparison with other online survey services is e-mail receivers’ data base bond with survey respondents’ data base. Basically, one common CRM (customer relationship management) system is used; therefore, survey data are used to create segments for e-mail marketing campaigns, but campaign results – to send as appropriate surveys to the respondents as possible. Such common CRM system guarantees high quality marketing campaigns and survey results because of common target audience segments used. Moreover, results allow making optimization of additional subscribers’ data base to create more appropriate segments.

4. Receive references after making a purchase

One of the best ways to get to know customer’s thoughts about your products or services is to send them a survey instantly after the purchase or to set up an auto-responder that will be sent a little bit later to have enough time for to try outtrying the service or product. Sending such surveys can be a good way to find out customer’s opinion that would help to improve the quality of your services.

Such opportunity is ensured by Mailigen API option. After making a purchase, the necessary query can be delivered with Mailigen API; as a result, an appropriate auto-responder letter can be sent or a customer can be added to a concrete segment.

5. Insert a link in your company’s website or spread it in social media

To receive regular feedback, a link to a survey can be inserted in company’s website and supplemented with motivating text to fill the form. An alternative way is spreading the link in social media. As information in social media can spread virus-like, it can be a good way not only to get responses for a survey, but also make people subscribe to company’s newsletter.

The above-mentioned opportunity is ensured by saving replies made by anonymous respondents, as well as by adding a subscription form at the end of the survey. One necessity is to create a competition, a discount or any other attractive offer, and a subscription form at the end of the survey can be a good way to get a new e-mail subscriber or even a client.

6. Add social “share” links to the survey

When sending an invitation to complete a survey, of course, it is possible to add social “share” links (Facebook, Twitter etc.), so the receiver could recommend the letter to his friends. Still, a better solution would be if these “share” links would not be used to recommend the sent letter, but to lead the visitors directly to the survey page. With Mailigen online surveys, it is possible. Also, this can be a good way to attract new survey respondents and new subscribers to company’s newsletters.

7. Mailigen survey inclusion in company’s website & Facebook profile

Basically, a survey link allows completing the survey in a site that is located on Mailigen server. Mailigen surveys, using embed code, are possible to include in company’s website and even in Facebook page (using Facebook iFrame application). It can be a good additional way how to adapt not only an appropriate design to the survey, but also address the homepage and Facebook visitors in a more convenient way.

8. Survey data segmentation

After sending a survey and evaluation of data, it is also important to create target audience groups according to those the data. When realizing selection process, it is possible to set up a data selection filter that agrees with concrete answers; in that way, the segments created during data selection process could later be used for sending more appropriate marketing campaigns.

9. Publication and exportation of survey data

After each completed survey, data can be published in exchange for a link, which allows viewing the results publicly. This site can be sent to the respondents in the next newsletters, communicated in company’s website or published in social media profiles.

At the same time, exportation of survey data offers additional options, for example, data selection before exportation. Such data selection allows exporting only a concrete target audience group according to the survey results, and in that way, it would relieve data processing.

10. Survey results’ synchronization with a contact data base

Survey results’ synchronization with a data base is an excellent way to carry out a computerizedautomatic segmentation. For example, when regularly receiving completed surveys, it would be great if answers would be instantly added to the respondent’s data base. Mailigen offers the above-mentioned option; survey responses will automatically be included in the receiver’s data base, as well as the respondent will be added to one of the segments according to survey responses. The process is completely computerizedautomatic, that means, when setting up the computerizedautomaticautomated segmentation system, there is no need to waste your time; you can just observe how target audience segments are created (more about Mailigen computerized segmentation with online surveys read in this article).

Summary

These are top 10 options provided by Mailigen marketing platform, and they can be realized for almost any objective or need. However, that does not mean these are the only options offered by Mailigen online surveys. In fact, there are plenty of other options, and all depends on the realized marketing campaign and its originality.

Mailigen’s new super fresh Dashboard

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Welcoming our article series on Mailigen’s newest features, we’ll start with the very basics: The New Dashboard.

The dashboard, like in most web apps, is the place where you land after you’ve logged in, and here is where magic starts to happen!

The new version introduces several significant changes to the dashboard: we have introduced a calendar and an account information panel; and we’ve put an emphasis on the knowledge base.

We’ve as well set forth a “fast-start” menu for your convenience. We have moved down the ‘last campaign report’ and ‘new subscribers’ so these fields don’t take all the attention, but if you need them, you know where to find the.

Mailigen Overview

Calendar

The calendar function is a very important new feature: it allows you to add events; see scheduled and sent campaigns. An event is a kind of a “note” for you; for example, you may want to add a note in November 30th, reminding you to start preparing a “Christmas promotion”, or set notes for tasks like “weekly list cleaning”, etc.

Mailigen Calendar

Simply find the desired date, click it and then click “Add Event” in the calendar. Once you’ve written the event’s reason, click “Add event”. Pretty convenient, at least we think so.

Account Information

Mailigen Account Information

The ‘Account information’ panel keeps you in touch with your account status — just so there aren’t any nasty surprises. :) Also, you can easily upgrade account and change the payment type if you click ‘Upgrade account’.

Quick links & knowledge base

Mailigen Dashboard Quicklinks

We’re particularly fond of these babies: quick links allow you to start working with just a few clicks — no more relentless digging through categories, no more wasting time finding what you need.

We think you’ll like our knowledge base with lots of instructional articles and videos, which we are adding rapidly, and a one-click ticket to the support staff is available for you if you get stuck anywhere.

You can simply type a search phrase and you’ll find everything you need in our vast knowledge base.

And as the last thing at the bottom of page you will notice wide footer with addition information that include support links, recent articles in our blog and social links to our profiles. We would like to invite you to join us on Twitter and Facebook.

We would love to hear feedback about improvements we could make to ensure that you like the new dashboard as much as we do, because the changes we do are actually meant to make your user experience better!
